The position document "Quantum Information Processing and Communication: strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe", is a roadmap-type document which has the following goals:

• promote QIPC research in Europe, strengthen its image and express it in a coherent way;
• unify the research community, elaborate a common European strategy and goals;
• provide input to the European Commission for the preparation of the Seventh Framework Programme and reach in an appropriate way decision makers;
• expand and strengthen activities on European level.

The genesis of this document, which was really a community effort (as it can be seen from the substantial list of contributors), is briefly accounted for in the FET proactive initiative site.

Until August 2007, the document is maintained by the WP1 of the EC funded project ERA-Pilot QIST; after that WP2 of QUROPE (lead and operated by the same people belonging to the aforementioned ERA-Pilot QIST WP1) will take over on this task.

A wikinized version of the roadmap (i.e., a version of the roadmap that anyone can edit) is also available at Quantiki the European QIPC wiki resource hosted by Cambridge CQC.

The updates will take place every year (with possible ad-hoc update occurring when needed) . The original "living-document" philosophy will be kept, which means that at any moment the QIPC community can suggest changes/addenda following these simple rules. Any suggestion will be sent to the appropriate member of the Roadmap Committee, who will take the decision of whether or not including them in the next update.
