Quantum Industry Specification Group

On July, 29th, 2008 the European Telecommunications Standards Institute ETSI has founded the Industry Specification Group on Quantum Key Distribution and Quantum Technologies (QISG). The group is aimed at successfully transferring quantum cryptography out of the controlled and trusted environment of experimental laboratories into the real world where business requirements, malevolent attackers, and social and legal norms have to be respected.

Anton Zeilinger receives 2008 Isaac Newton medal

The Isaac Newton medal of the Institute of Physics for outstanding contributions to physics has been awarded to Professor Anton Zeilinger, for his pioneering conceptual and experimental contributions to the foundations of quantum physics, which have become the cornerstone for the rapidly-evolving field of quantum information.

An Entangled World

We are happy to announce that the missing additional funding for the making of the QUROPE-produced documentary movie 'An Entangled World' has been secured. This means that production of the movie will start immediately under the supervision of Danish director Lars Becker-Larsen. The movie is due to be released by the end of 2009.

Antonella Karlson

It is with deep sadness and shock that we announce the death of Antonella Karlson, who passed away early this morning after fighting for several months against cancer.

We have lost not only a colleague but also a true friend, who was an inspiration for all of us in her persuit of a common vision for QIPC. She will be missed in many ways.

Our hearts go out to her family and all who were close to her.

QIPC groups last ERA update call

As the ERA-Pilot project is ending (but the data collected will leave through the Coordination Action QUROPE, see www.qurope.net) we ask all the groups to complete the on-line form that can be accessed in the group's personal web page (login at http://qist.ect.it/Scripts/log.htm with the username and password you received at the moment of the first registration and then click on the "Group Update" entry on the top menu).

The data you will be asked to provide are the following:

the year your group started the QIPC activity
the main activity field of your group (to be chosen between Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Chemistry)
three QICS codes characterizing the group activity

You might want to take the occasion to update your group data :).

The deadline for completing the registration is Monday the 24th.

New version of the QIPC Strategic Report

Version 1.4 of the QIPC Strategic Report is available for download. The main change with respect to version 1.3 is that the Appendix has been rewritten for introducing the concepts of Quantum Information Technologies (QITs). Accordingly, Section 5 ("Prospects for Applications and Commercial Exploitation") has been removed, due to the large overlap with the new Appendix.

The Discussion Forum on QITs has been (re)opened: use this to give us feedback about this new roadmap section.

The new version can be downloaded from the Reports section of the QUROPE website.

Artur Ekert awarded the Hughes Medal

The 2007 Hughes Medal has been awarded to Professor Artur Ekert for his pioneering work on quantum cryptography and his many important contributions to the theory of quantum computation and other branches of quantum physics.

Dicussion on 2009 QIPC Call

As announced by the European Officer David Guedj at the FET session of the QIPC 2007 Barcelona conference, on December 6th there will be a meeting in Brussels for discussing how the 2009 QIPC FET Proactive Call should look like. We are sure that you all have ideas on how we can improve these guidelines, and we would appreciate if you share those ideas with us in this dedicated QUROPE Forum.

We would also like to remind you that the general Forum for discussing Quantum Information Technologies is again open. Any contribution to the discussion will be highly appreciated!

Anton Zeilinger awarded the first Isaac Newton medal

The Austrian physicist and quantum-computing pioneer Anton Zeilinger has been awarded the inaugural Isaac Newton medal by the Institute of Physics. Zeilinger was honoured for "his pioneering conceptual and experimental contributions to the foundations of quantum physics, which have become the cornerstone for the rapidly-evolving field of quantum information".

Anton Zeilinger received the senior EPS/QEOD prize 2007 for fundamental aspects on June 19. The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to quantum electronics and optics.

The link provided yesterday for the new Photonics website(http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/photonics/) is provisional, and will be replaced by http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/photonics/home_en.html in (hopefully) a matter of days.

As far as the upcoming call in this field is concerned, since single photon emission / detection have gone past the 'proof-of-principle' phase, photonic components manipulating single photons for (quantum) information processing, communication or sensing are in principle in scope of the Objective ICT-2007.3.5 - Photonic Components of Call-2 (ICT Workprogram 2007-2008). For this Call, research could for example address core photonic components and subsystems for "...sensors exploiting innovative sensing principles", or "high performance image sensors", with the aim to deliver a functional photonic component or subsystem for multiple application fields.

As already announced there is a "Photonics Information Day for proposer" scheduled on the 26 of April and one can refer to the link http://www.photonics21.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&id=4&Itemid=57 for more info. New website for Photonics

The Photonics field has been given a higher profile in FP7, and, as a result, a new website has been made available. The latter has the purpose of giving an overview of the different activities going on in this field and providing contacts and links where more detailed information can be found.

For the QIPC Community it might be interesting to monitor this website, given the existing overlap that some Quantum Information Technologies (of the enabling type, like, e.g., single photon detectors/sources) have with this research field. In particular in view of the forthcoming FP7 calls in photonics, there is a "Photonics Information Day for proposer" scheduled on the 26/04/2007 in Brussels. People who are interested might want to attend in order to get an idea if and how they could eventually apply. For the moment there are no concrete information about this event and the aforementioned calls; we will report them here when available.

New version of the QIPC Strategic Report available

Version 1.3 of the QIPC Strategic Report is available for download. Changes with respect to version 1.2 include:

Executive summary completely rewritten
QIPC research in Europe updated:
- Up-to-date description of the QIPC Proactive Initiative
- More detailed (but still work in progress) description of the QIPC funding at the EU regional level (WP3)
- Incomplete/obsolete data on International funding programs tagged: will be updated by WP2 in the final version of the document
Section on "Atoms and Cavity QED" broadened to "Neutral Atoms, Molecules and Cavity QED"
Updated short- and long-term goals for semiconductor quantum dots and for impurity spins
Some changes/addenda in the theory section (most notably in the following subsections: Quantum Algorithms and Complexity, Geometric and topological methods for fault tolerant quantum computing, Noisy communication channels, Spin-off to other fields)
Format changing of the document to the QUROPE styles

QIPC Young Investigator Award 2007

In order to encourage dissemination of good practices, QUROPE has established the QIPC Young Investigator Award. The biannual Award will be given to a researcher under the age of 35, for the best research recently published or presented at one of the biannual QIPC major conferences.

The last issue of the Parliament Magazine of November 13, 2006 published an article on QIPC (page 81). It reflects the work of the coordination action project QUROPE, the QIPC roadmap and the QIPC FET proactive initiative.

The entire issue is dedicated to IST in FP7 and the Helsinki IST conference. There are articles from the Commissioner Ms. Reding, from our Director General Fabio Colasanti and from a number of Parliamentarians. It is certainly a positive sign to have a QIPC page in this issue!
